Most spiritual seekers start their journey running on a very old, very exhausted fossil fuel: belief.
You may believe (fervently, fundamentally, vaguely) in a God, a Self, Jesus, Buddha, an afterlife, an eternal soul, reincarnation, spiritual awakening, enlightenment, or any number of religious concepts, but you don’t actually know if any of them are real.
Glance at the “solid ground” below your feet right now and you’ll see that it isn’t so solid after all. You are, contrary to your beliefs, knee deep in the dark, muddy swamp waters of spiritual ignorance. Most belief systems are constructed from inherited stories, cultural myths, age-old falsehoods or fanciful thinking.
If you attempt to climb the seven spiritual mountains fueled by belief, with a great amount of effort and a lot of luck, you might make it to a few mountain tops. But if your goal is true awakening, belief, faith, hope and any forms of wishful thinking are completely useless currencies.
You need to step onto solid ground. You need what I call a Proof Jewel.
The most important preparation for a journey of this magnitude is the conviction––gained by experiential evidence––that at least some part of this spiritual paradigm is absolutely 100%––beyond a shadow of a doubt––real.
A "proof" jewel provides profound internal experiential evidence rather than external scientific "proof." Science measures the objective (what we can all agree is happening outside of us), while spirituality explores the subjective (what is undeniably happening inside of you).
When you upgrade your fuel source from belief to a steadfast conviction gained from empirical evidence, you are suddenly running on a hybrid liquid-hydrogen/oxygen rocket fuel. Your probability of successfully summiting the mountains skyrockets.
Proof jewels come in many sizes and shapes. Stepping onto the modern spiritual path means stepping outside of your comfort zone to acquire one. Here is what that shift from belief to proof actually looks like in practice:
Instead of believing in a soul: You experience multiple, repeatable out-of-body experiences where it’s proven to you that you are more than your physical body.
Instead of believing in an afterlife: You have a lucid-dream, meditation-insight or sacred medicine journey where you’re shown that an afterlife exits.
Instead of believing in mindfulness: You take an eight-week mindfulness course at your local college or hospital where you experience the physical and mental benefits first hand.
Instead of talking to God with prayer in your mind: You meditate and talk to God with your whole heart and being.
Instead of believing in spiritual awakening: You experience a non-abiding glimpse of the awakened state while on retreat with an awakened teacher.
If you are ready to stop relying on second-hand information from others and seek out personal, internal, experiential proof, here are a few highly effective modalities to start with:
1. Binaural Beats / Hemi-Sync Technology Listening to specific audio frequencies in each ear prompts the brain to enter specific states (alpha, theta, delta). It is highly accessible, scientifically grounded in brainwave entrainment, and an excellent starting point for absolute beginners to experience deep physical relaxation and hypnagogic states.
2. Sensory Deprivation / Float Tanks Floating in a pitch-black, soundproof tank filled with body-temperature saltwater removes all external sensory input. It is one of the fastest, most reliable ways to force the brain into a theta state, offering a profound loss of physical body boundaries and deep states of introspection.
3. Conscious Breathwork Intensive breathing techniques designed to bypass the conscious mind and alter blood chemistry. It is extremely fast-acting and provides massive emotional catharsis, visionary states, and a profound sense of lightness afterward using nothing but your own lungs.
We set the books, videos and lectures aside. Like it or not, this is a new-age and during these times––personal and experiential proof is king.
It’s perfectly okay to feel overwhelmed, under-prepared, unworthy or hesitant. Worrying or stressing about where you think you should be or could be is normal, but also pointless. This isn’t a marathon––it’s an incredible, life-long adventure composed of thousands of steps.
If you are ready to find your Proof Jewel and take that first authentic step, I highly recommend you begin with a
